How Quitting My Corporate Job For My Startup Dream F*cked My Life Up

Finally the SMS arrived:

“Tomorrow morning 5am, flight number AZ610 from Rome to New York.”

An SMS hitting my BlackBerry on Sunday evenings used to decide my destination and client for the coming week.

I was working for one of the top three global strategy consulting firms.

A life packed in a suitcase. A consulting life where you miss out on everything and everyone in life, except Excel spreadsheets. A fancy business life we are taught to be ideal slaves of, at top business schools whose degrees we are proud to hold.

After few hours of sleep, the private driver was taking me to the Rome Fiumicino airport so I could take my fancy business-class flight to NYC. Upon arrival, I was checking in to a fancy five-star hotel and heading to my client’s office afterwards.

The salary? It was fancy, too. The company was proud to be among the top payers of the industry.

Parents

There was something wrong with this consulting life, though. I couldn't stand this bullsh*t any longer and one day I called my parents:

“Dad, mom, I just quit my job. I want to start my own startup.”

My mom almost had a heart attack. It wasn't the first thing a perfectionist mother wanted to hear after encouraging me to graduate from the world’s top business schools with top grades.

I tried to ease her distress. No chance.

“Mom, I hate it. All these consultants are pretending to be happy and they are taking happiness pills. I get to sleep only 3–4 hours a day. All those benefits the company promised don’t exist. Remember the fancy five-star hotel? I am working almost 20 hours a day and I don’t even enjoy it. Fancy breakfast? We never have time to have that. Fancy lunch, dinner? It’s just a sandwich in front of our Excel spreadsheets.

Oh, by the way, instead of enjoying a champagne, I stare at spreadsheets during my entire business class flights, too. The fancy salary? I never have time to spend a single penny of it.

I hate my life, Mom, it’s such a loser life. I don’t even see my girlfriend. I can’t fake it anymore. I want to start my own business.”

My parents had retired after years of a 9–5 working routine at their secure and boring government jobs.

I knew that coming from a family with no entrepreneurial background, it would be difficult to explain my situation to them, but I didn’t expect the call next morning.

It was my mom on the phone:

“Sooooooooo, how is your business doing?! Is it growing?!”

No matter what I said, I couldn't explain to her that a business needs more than one day to grow.

Girlfriend, Friends and Social Circle

Having had the most supportive girlfriend ever, it was now time I shared the news with my friends who were busy climbing the fancy career steps in the fancy corporate world.

I told everyone that I just quit my job to follow my startup dream. Some of my friends gradually stopped seeing me, probably because they thought there was something wrong with me since it was the second “fancy” job I had quit in a short period of time.

While the rest of my friends were supportive, there was, however, still something wrong with my relationship with them:

I soon realized I was starting to pull myself away from social gatherings.

Every time I met with those friends, I didn't have many updates to give them in response to their repeated questions, such as, “So, how is your startup going? You are going to be the next Zuckerberg, right?” “Oh man, we are so proud of you and we are so sure you will soon receive a huge round of investment.”

Doing a startup was a long journey and I was putting myself under so much pressure by giving such a f*ck about what other people think.

Day by day, I was getting lonelier and more depressive as I avoided social occasions. My startup progress was not as fast as my social circle imagined it to be and I was fed up with telling people it took years for startups like Facebook and Twitter to arrive at where they are now.

The only comfortable place was next to my few entrepreneur friends. It was true, only an entrepreneur could understand an entrepreneur.

Cash, cash, cash.

As if the social pressure and loneliness were not enough, I was meeting the mother of all stresses: running out of cash much faster than I had imagined.

This was killing my productivity and ability to make proper decisions. I was panicking and rushing to be successful and to make money.

One day, I even found myself asking my girlfriend for a few cents because I had no money to buy bottled water. I didn’t know it was just the beginning of such a difficult life full of ups and downs…

Today.

Enough with the drama: more than two years have passed since those days. I am now writing this blog post in a beautiful resort in Phuket, Thailand, while enjoying my mojito.

Wait, I am not selling a dream. No, I haven’t become a millionaire startup founder.

However, my business has a constant stream of cash that allows me to travel the world and to work from wherever there is WiFi.

There are, however, five things I wish I had asked myself before starting this painful journey. Five questions I believe every future entrepreneur should ask himself before taking the first step to entrepreneurship:

1. Are you ready for the social pressure?

If you have friends and family who are not entrepreneurs, they won’t truly understand what you are trying to achieve and the public pressure will be even higher.

I cared so much about what other people think of me– so much that it ruined my life.

I was so hard on myself and punished myself with even more work so I could announce my success as soon as possible. That is, until the day I realized no one gave a f*ck about me, so why would I?

You are no more than a few seconds of attention other people give to a Facebook status. In 2014, no one has time to care about others in such a crowded, noisy world.

If you care so much about what others think, you will waste your time trying to prove that you are successful instead of focusing on your startup.

Get a life. I got mine quite late.

2. Are you single or do you have an extremely supportive partner?

As we grow up, we share more of our life with our partners than with our friends or family. While I was lucky to have such an amazing girl, it was so sad to see many of my entrepreneur friends breaking up with their girlfriends along the way.

Doing your own business is tough – way tougher than I could have ever imagined. Your mind is constantly f*cked up with a million things going on inside and no other person, including your girlfriend, has a single clue what is going on in there.

If you are not single, make sure your partner understands it’s sometimes normal not to have a mindset even for a simple kiss.

Yes, for a simple proper French kiss.

3. Do you have enough cash to last at least a year?

Good, then multiply that amount at least by three because you will be running out of your savings way faster than you ever imagined. Along the way, there will be so many hidden costs, accountant fees, lawyer needs, broken iPhones or PCs, etc.

Get ready for a smaller apartment, smaller food portions, or counting your cents, which you never cared about in your life previously.

The last few months before you totally run out of your cash will be especially difficult and the pressure will grow so exponentially that you won’t be able to sleep properly.

Success will come slowly, and cash will burn fast. Be smart – plan from day one.

4. Are you ready to sleep only few hours a day?

Having escaped from the corporate consulting world, I was thinking I was finally going to live the dream by working whenever I wanted to work – until I read Lori Greiner’s following quote:

“Entrepreneurs are willing to work 80 hours a week to avoid working 40 hours a week.”

http://ianmurchison.com/

It all started by little wake-ups in the middle of the night. At the beginning, it was because I was too excited about my ideas and I had so many of them. I simply couldn’t wait for the morning to arrive so that I could start working again.

Then came the exaggeration phase. I was working too much because I never had enough of working for my idea and I wanted to do more. However, the more I worked and the later I went to bed, the more difficult it was to fall asleep and the lower the quality of my sleep became.

As a result, at least two or three days of every week I was having days with almost no productivity.

Don’t be fooled by my fancy Instagram picture above. Don’t be fooled by over-hyped funding news about startup founders becoming millionaires.

The stories behind the scenes have so many painful days, sleepless nights, and continuous rejections and failures.

The journey to success is long. Very long. Very often, too long.

5. How do you define success?

Each of us has a different priority list in life. For most people, money is the number one priority on the list, while work-life balance ranks higher for others. Consequently, people define success differently.

Depending on your definition of success, the difficulty of your entrepreneurial journey will differ, too. If money and public success are what matters to you the most, you are likely to have a hard time along your journey.

Remember Hemingway’s wise words:

“It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.”

Successful entrepreneurs are not necessarily those who raise millions of investment rounds. Don’t forget, they are one in a million.

There are, however, thousands of dreamers out there who manage to bootstrap their startups or live so well off on their own, but even they do not make it to the top of tech news.

No matter how much your journey f*cks up your life or how difficult it will be, enjoy the ride and keep following your passion. As Tony Gaskin puts it perfectly:

“If you don’t build your dream, someone will hire you to help build theirs.”

SOME GOLDEN THOUGHTS TO PONDER

(Important: I have no idea about its authenticity and credibility)

1. If your child lies to you often, it is because you over-react too harshly to their inappropriate behaviour.
2. If your child is not taught to confide in you about their mistakes, you've lost them.
3. If your child had poor self-esteem, it is because you advise them more than you encourage them.
4. If your child does not stand up for themselves, it is because from a young age you have disciplined them regularly in public.
5. If your child takes things that do not belong to them, it is because when you buy them things, you don't let them chose what they want.
6. If your child is cowardly, it is because you help them too quickly.
7. If your child does not respect other people's feelings, it is because instead of speaking to your child, you order and command them.
8. If your child is too quick to anger, it is because you give too much attention to misbehaviour and you give little attention to good behaviour.
9. If your child is excessively jealous, it is because you only congratulate them when they successfully complete something and not when they improve at something even if they don't successfully complete it.
10. If your child intentionally disturbs you, it is because you are not physically affectionate enough.
11. If your child is openly defied, it is because you openly threaten to do something but don't follow through.
12. If your child is secretive, it is because they don't trust that you won't blow things out of proportion.
13. If your child talks back to you, it is because they watch you do it to others and think its normal behaviour.
14. If your child doesn't listen to you but listens to others, it is because you are too quick to make decisions.
15. If your child rebels it is because they know you care more about what others think than what is right or wrong.
Change starts at home. Try a few if not all and see the change in the relations.

Madrassas are schools of terror: BJP's Unnao MP Sakshi Maharaj

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Unnao Swami Sakshi Maharaj on Sunday stirred a hornet's nest by calling madrassas as "hubs of terror and jihadis". He alleged that students were not being taught about nationalism in the religious schools and said, "To teach students only about Quran and turn them into terrorists and jihadis is not in the best interests of the nation."

Addressing an event organized in memory of Rani Laxmi Bai in Nademau village of Kannuaj, he said, "Name a madrassa in the country that hoists the National Flag on August 15 and January 26. They will have green flags but never the Tricolour."

Madrassa students hoisting the National Flag on August 15

The Unnao MP said madrassas "which have no connection with nationalism" are being given government aid. "Most of our schools do not take the aid but it is being given to madrassas having no connection with nationalism," he said. Questioning the rationale behind different set of rules for madarssas and schools, Sakshi Maharaj said, "madrassas should follow the same curriculum as normal schools."

Stoking the ongoing love jihad controversy, the Unnao MP said that he was not against 'love' per se as it has existed since ages. "But the worrying factor is that children of 'love-jihad' couples are being brainwashed for anti-national activities," he claimed and added, "Money for this love-jihad is coming from the Middle East."

In fact, Sakshi Maharaj has been raking up the madrassa issue for quite sometime now. While addressing an event in Etah on September 7, he had described it as "hub of terror" and claimed that 'love jihad' was prospering through these institutions.

I think I should mentioned one comment here by a man named Rishi Khurana, you can find his details here:
"http://mytimes.indiatimes.com/profile/rishikhurana.sufi" copied his comment as it is below,

"Would the same law first destroy RSS and this guy himself who is openly preaching hate? MoreOver SiDevilIam • 2 minutes ago It is not worth my time to comment on BJP MP from Unnao, Sakshi Maharaj. However, since his claims having been reported in Indian media, I make an aeffort to explain the meaning of the word, ‘Madrassa.’ Nobody teaches ‘love jihad’ or terrorism. Not in India but anywhere in the world. Madrassa is spelled differently, as it is an Arabic word. It refers to a school, not specifically, as charged, religious school. One more thing, the word school is in America sense–covering college–university having rights to conduct undergraduate, graduate and post graduate degrees. Secular courses are also offered. Not only Arabic language but many European languages are taught. A typical Islamic school usually offers two courses of study: a ḥifẓ course teaching memorization of the Qur’an (the person who commits the entire Qurʼan to memory is called a ḥāfiẓ); and an ʻālim course leading the candidate to become an accepted scholar in the community. A regular curriculum includes courses in Arabic, tafsir (Qur’anic interpretation), sharīʻah (Islamic law), hadiths (recorded sayings and deeds of Prophet Muhammad), mantiq (logic), and Muslim history. In the Ottoman Empire, during the Early Modern Period, the study of hadiths was introduced by Süleyman I.[4] Depending on the educational demands, some madrasas also offer additional advanced courses in Arabic literature, English and other foreign languages, as well as science and world history. Ottoman madrasas along with religious teachings also taught “styles of writing, grammary, syntax, poetry, composition, natural sciences, political sciences, and etiquette.”[4] People of all ages attend, and many often move on to becoming imams.[citation needed] The certificate of an ʻālim, for example, requires approximately twelve years of study.[citation needed] A good number of the ḥuffāẓ (plural of ḥāfiẓ) are the product of the madrasas. The madrasas also resemble colleges, where people take evening classes and reside in dormitories. An important function of the madrasas is to admit orphans and poor children in order to provide them with education and training. Madrasas may enroll female students; however, they study separately from the men. Sakshi Maharaj is making stuff without checking the facts. …and I am Rishi"

Take a look on this video please:

I have a simple solution: for this kind of publicity stunts, more specifically the politics of Polarization, I think this is an old myth (old tactics of making common people 'Mango Man' fool), why do these people not directly go to police or court if they really have any proof, if it really happens, I don't know, its your govt. make a law and give them capital punishment but please do not spit venom in the society, I repeat please do not spit the venom again in the societysociety is already fully loaded with hatred politics, now its unable to bear anymore venom. And if they can't proof then they (Sakshi Maharaj minded people) should be hanged at a public place for spreading venom in the society.

And for common people, please do not give importance to such topics, like terrorism in Madrassa, Love-Jihad etc. we do give importance thats why these people easily dare to speak such nonsense.

And finally I want to conclude with the words of 'Delirium' in her book "Lauren Oliver"-

“You can build walls all the way to the sky and I will find a way to fly above them. You can try to pin me down with a hundred thousand arms, but I will find a way to resist. And there are many of us out there, more than you think. People who refuse to stop believing. People who refuse to come to earth. People who love in a world without walls, people who love into hate, into refusal, against hope, and without fear.”

ABVP candidate wins with some help from a model — her poster

(Source:Indian Express)
Kanika Shekhawat; her posters featured Nauheed Cyrusi
Thousands of Delhi University students who voted for ABVP candidate Kanika Shekhawat in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections received a jolt Monday when they realised that the face of the candidate they voted for and the one who came to power aren't the same.

In the run up to the elections, posters carrying Shekhawat’s name urging students to vote for her were pasted across the city on flyovers, subways and metro pillars, especially near off campus colleges in east and west Delhi. The photo on the posters, however, is that of Indian model and VJ Nauheed Cyrusi.

Students who voted to make Shekhawat DUSU secretary said they felt “cheated”. “These leaders don’t usually visit off campus colleges, so the only way we know them is through posters,” said Rahul Mehra, a student from a west Delhi college.

“Maybe she didn’t think she is photogenic enough. All is fair in war and elections, I guess,” said Swati Sinha, another student.

Shekhawat, however, said she had nothing to do with the posters, and blamed her rival party, the National Student Union of India (NSUI), for the “conspiracy”. “ It has come to my notice that there are some posters of mine bearing images of Nauheed Cyrusi. I am sure this was done by the NSUI so that they could get my nomination cancelled. I have filed a complaint regarding this in the police headquarters. The fact that I have won is a tight slap on their faces,” Shekhawat said.

I think its a good explanation, what else one can say in a democratic country like India, that too a University in the Capital.

The NSUI denied the charges. “It is not the culture of the party to unnecessarily target candidates. ABVP has indulged in all kinds of malpractices this election season, and they should own up if their wrongdoing has been noted,” said Roji M John, NSUI national president.

A graduate in political science from Miranda College, Shekhawat is studying MA in Political Science in ARSD college, south campus. Shekhawat, who comes from Rajasthan, has been with the ABVP for the past three years, and won the election by stressing on women-centric issues within the university. “My focus will be to work on issues of women security and empowerment in the university. My immediate priorities will include reopening the women development cell in the university, and creating separate counters for girls to get bus passes,” she had said.

She defeated NSUI’s Amit Teema by 3,022 votes.

Choosing the Perfect Blog Name

(Source:The Daily Post)

I discover different types of blogs in our community, from travel to food to parenting, with memorable and clever names.…

We discover different types of blogs in our community, from travel to food to parenting, with memorable and clever names. You may notice that a number of blogs on WordPress.com have unique web addresses, or custom domains: instead of mysite.wordpress.com, their address is mysite.com. Bloggers get custom domains for different reasons, but ultimately, it’s a great way to build and solidify your presence across the Internet. You can register a new domain through WordPress.com; you can also use a domain you already own with your WordPress.com site, which is called domain mapping.

A crucial step before purchasing a custom domain is deciding on the right name for your blog. Since selecting a name that best reflects your content is so important, we wanted to share insights from two writers on WordPress.com — Sarah and “C.J.’s Mom” — on how they ended up with names they were happy with.

Where’s My Toothbrush?

Sarah, a world traveler who has left toothbrushes in many countries, documents her adventures at Where’s My Toothbrush? We love how her blog name not only complements her writing style and reveals her personality, but personifies a toothbrush!

How did your blog name come about?

I was staying in a hostel in Beijing, China, and the walls were covered with graffiti. One quotation struck me:

I continue to collect things for an apartment I don’t have, while my toothbrush rests in bathroom cupboards on three different continents.
It got to me: Something about these societal obligations to have certain things, or the assumption that at a certain age one must have a fixed address. Plus, I forget my toothbrush everywhere. I remember claiming at the hostel bar, “One day, I’m going to start a blog named after that.”

When I left China, I did.

Do you use this name on other sites or for other purposes?

To some degree, yes. I use the Twitter handle @wheresmytbrush and the name “Sarah’s Toothbrush.” When I comment on other blogs, I use this “name.” It makes things consistent within the blogging community to the point that other travel bloggers probably roll their eyes and say something like, “Oh right, that toothbrush lady . . .”

After blogging for a while, are you still happy with your blog name? How has it proved successful (or not)?

I am still completely happy with my blog’s name. It’s clever, honest, and forgetful — kind of like the blog itself. My blog focuses on the last two-and-a-half years of almost constant travel; and oh man, the toothbrushes I’ve left behind.

It’s proved successful, as people smile when I talk about the title. It’s not so successful for those on search engines who are genuinely concerned about their toothbrush’s whereabouts.

Got advice for bloggers choosing a domain name?

I encourage bloggers to go with their gut, but also to think about the name logistically: Use it in a sentence. Reference it to friends. Write it without spaces to see how it would look as an email address, on Twitter, etc. Your blog’s name will be the first things readers will see. You want to attract them with originality but not mislead them with the content.

Raising My Rainbow

"C.J.’s Mom” is the writer behind Raising My Rainbow, a blog about raising C.J., a gender-nonconforming five-year-old. The name fits the content and the colorful, carefree design. The alliteration in the name (the repetition of the letter R) is also effective and makes it easy to recall.

How did your domain name come about? If you had alternatives, why did you choose this one?

I liked the word rainbow because of its association with the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning) community and because the image is cheery, happy, and hopeful — just like my son. I initially wanted to name my blog Raising A Rainbow, but the domain name was taken. I settled on Raising My Rainbow, which I didn’t like as much, but now I love it and wouldn’t change a thing.

Do you use this name on other sites or for other purposes?

Absolutely! That’s why it was so important to own the domain name, which feels like it gives some legitimacy to my blog, my writing, and me as a mom who hopes to make a difference. I use the blog name everywhere: my email address, all social media, business cards, as the name associated with my P.O. Box, and wherever and whenever I talk about being a blogger.

After blogging for a while, are you still happy with your blog name? How has it proved successful (or not)?

I love it. I’m glad things worked out the way they did and that the domain for my original blog name was taken. I think my blog name is catchy, easy to remember, and accurately reflects the content and tone of my blog. And, from what I hear, other people like it, too.

Got advice for bloggers choosing a domain name?

Before you make a move: research, research, research. Research and decide on a name that is unique. Then, check if the domain name is available. It is inexpensive to buy the domain name, and different domain seller site makes it easy to connect it to your blog.

Make sure your name is available across social media platforms you intend to use. I think the urge is to just jump right in, but if you aren’t strategic about it, you could pick a name, get going, and then not be able to use the name on Facebook or Twitter. Take the time to research . . . then pounce.

And, have fun! come here always, thanks.

Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide (Source: Google)
